Here are details of the forthcoming meetings of the GBPS, one of the most popular societies in the UK with an award-winning website and lively programme of events.
Saturday 18 May 2024 – All Day Meeting
A meeting of the GBPS will be held on Saturday 18 May at the Royal Philatelic Society, 15 Abchurch Lane, London EC4N 7BW from 11:00 a.m. The morning session will consist of The President’s Display from Peter Lister FRPSL entitled The Joy an Inheritance Brings (Part 2). Peter said “The title ‘The Joy an Inheritance Brings’ is quite true, as you remember the good times you have had with the person whose collection it was. I gained four 16 page stock books crammed with photogravure material that had been seriously collected over forty years, but nothing fully identified as he knew what was in there, thus a message to all, mount up and identify items as you acquire them. I will be displaying Proofs, Printing errors, Coils, Booklets, Perforations, Watermarks, Usage, Harrison’s work, Sizes, Controls, Sheet separation to name just some of the topics that will be covered in the display. This will be a traditional two laydown room display of material in frames.”
The afternoon session, commencing at 2:15pm, will consist of a display from Daphne McMillan FRPSL entitled The Family, Life and Reign of King George VI. This will be a traditional two laydown room display of material in frames and PowerPoint presentation to the room. The display will consist of a fairly detailed look at the constant varieties on the King George VI stamps, plus a selection of postal stationery and material rejected by the censor and/or undelivered.
Saturday 1 June 2024
Zoom Only Meeting
A Zoom meeting on Saturday 1 June from 2:00pm-3:00pm will consist of a Power Point display from Theo Brauers & Erich Kirschneck entitled Mail from GB to Sweden – 1840 to June 1875. Mail transport from the United Kingdom to Sweden was complex and varied for a number of reasons.
- Several different routes, partly dependent on weather conditions
- The expansion of the railway network on the continent led to various changes of routes
- Only one postal treaty between the UK and Sweden, however, this was effective for only three years
Postal treaties between the UK and other states (above all with Prussia and Denmark) were also of great importance. Different currencies and the different weight progressions in these countries complicate the interpretation of letters even further.
Erich and Theo will endeavour to present the factors that influenced the choice of the different routes as clearly as possible with the help of a number of contemporary letters.
Saturday 8 June. Joint Meeting with Postal Stationery Society at SWINPEX
A meeting on 8 June will be held at the Grange Leisure & Community Centre, Stratton St. Margaret, Swindon, SNS 4YJ from 2.30pm until 3.30pm. This will be Member’s Displays from the GBPS and the Postal Stationery Society in attendance.

This will be a traditional two laydown room display of material in frames.
